The new Burberry Complete Eye Palette comes with four eye shadows. |
Here's my review the first of five of the palettes I purchased (here's a sneak peek of all them ;-)): 'Smokey Grey' (No. 01).

The compact comes with a black velvet pouch with subtle signature Burberry check and has a folding flap for closure. |

The sleek gunmetal compact is sturdy, substantially weighty and bears the signature Burberry check pattern on the lid. As you can see, the pattern against the gunmetal surface is not at all too ridiculously loud and you can see it more in different angles under lighting. It's quite classy and chic methinks. I love it! The 'BURBERRY' label is also embossed on the bottom front of the compact. The compact is securely shut via a magnetic closure.

The compact comes with a mirror for on-the-go application and touch-ups. |

The palette comes with three small applicators (top to bottom): blending brush (made of soft natural hair), thin synthetic eye liner and a sponge applicator. I found them to be very good quality, particularly the blending brush. The sponge applicator is quite dense, tightly bound - not flimsy (similar to the white sponge applicators that Chanel sometimes provides with their eye shadow palettes, which are pretty good quality as far as sponge applicators go). I like how the applicators have extra length to them (almost double the length) compared with the applicator that comes with the Burberry (Single) Sheer Eye Shadows. The handles are etched with the 'BURBERRY' logo.

Colours, Texture & Finish
From bottom left to top right: black (matte), soft, medium neutral grey (matte), blue grey (sheen with fine silver shimmers) and white/silver (sheen with fine shimmers).
With the exception of the lightest shade, I found all the shades to apply and blend fairly smoothly and evenly (especially the blue grey which had the strongest pigmentation). The lightest shade was a little patchy to apply, but isn't really too bad if you're using it just as a wash of colour, and because it is quite a light shade, has a sheen and shimmers, the unevenness isn't glaringly obvious. The black shade can be built up easily for more intensity, while the matte medium grey remains fairly soft, which I personally don't mind. I've of the opinion that not all shades have to be so intense and this gives a contrast to the other shades in the palette and helps to pull it all together. I like to use the medium matte grey as the base just on the eye lid for an evening look, or the on the 'outer-v' of the eyes for depth and definition for day wear.
Unfortunately, the only other real issue I found was that the blue grey results in quite a bit of fall out during application. This was quite surprising to me as I had not experienced this with any of the Burberry single eye shadows (or any other powder eye shadow I've tried come to think of it! I guess I've just been lucky!) Anyway, this means you will have to apply the eye shadow first prior to the rest of your make up including your base or foundation. Ensure you wipe around the eye area with a cotton ball/pad and cleanser to remove all fall out, otherwise this will affect the colour of your foundation!
Upon closer inspection, I also found that the texture of the eye shadows (except for the medium matte grey (which comes the closest) and maybe the blue grey), are not as soft, finely milled and buttery that the Burberry eye shadows have been well-known for. The black matte for instance, feels slightly dry in comparison to the Burberry single eye shadows, and therefore doesn't glide on the skin as easily. However, this is because Burberry have initially set the standard exceptionally high that I notice these things! Compared to other brands though, this is still not that bad. Apart from this, it is really only the fall-out of one of the shades that's the most noticeable negative of this palette. It's a bit more high maintenance in that you have to add that extra step to clean it up, unfortunately.
Swatches
Swatches are applied against medium / light tan olive skin tone (~NC30-35). Photographed indoors under natural low lighting and using a strobe.
Scent
There is no noticeable scent.
RRP & Size
RRP & Size
AU$85 for 5.4 g / 0.19 oz of product. Surprisingly not as expensive as I thought they would be. Compared to Chanel eye shadow quads which have a baked formulation here in Australia, at AU$90 for 4 g, the Burberry Complete Eye Palette is slightly better value for money.
Availability New to the permanent range, the palettes are now available at Burberry Beauty counters at selected David Jones stores.
Overall Recommendation
Overall, I'm still happy I purchased this palette even though it's not particularly unique in colour and colour combination. Grey eye shadows are one of my staples and personal favourites as it's very flattering against brown eyes. I can see myself using this frequently, because they're neutral everyday/evening shades. It's also a relief to carry and travel with a single compact than multiple, heavy single eye shadow compacts! The fall-out doesn't really bother me that much - I just have to remember to apply eye shadow before foundation(!), and although it adds an extra step to tidy up, I generally don't apply more than two eye shadow shades unless I have more time up my sleeve (i.e., not in a rush), so it's not too bad for me. I still prefer these to Chanel baked eye shadow quads, which are more expensive and are generally more sheer. I recommend to try it out in store to see for yourself. ;)
